Bike and Build

So I originally started this blog way back when I decided to ride my bike across the country, from Seattle to Providence. I did it to raise money for a cause that I really believed/believe in. Affordable housing. Although Bike & Build is it's own organization, a lot of the money from it's trips go to Habitat for Humanity. I was very involved with it in college spending my spring and winter breaks, with friends, building houses for others. Thats the best thing about doing charity work, it's good for you because it makes you feel great that your doing something for others, as well as doing something for others. With all that said I though I would give you a snipet of an E-mail that was just sent from Brendan Newman who is the current Program Director with Bike & Build as well as a friend. Also they just remade a video to promo the organization, Click Here To See It. Here is the E-mail:

"As you may or may not know, 2008 was our most successful year to date. We introduced a new route, Boston to Santa Barbara (B2SB), bringing our total to seven trips. We donated over $100,000 more than we did in 2007 - $496,000 - which means that we’ve given more than $1.6MM over the past six years. We are also currently working on finishing the plans for our eighth route, South Carolina to Santa Cruz (SC2SC), which will make its inaugural run next summer. It promises to be an exciting addition to our routes as it will be the longest in terms of miles and feature more build days than any other trip, in addition to the fact that it will fund and build an entire house during a Blitz Build in Colorado Springs. We’ve also made great strides organizationally, once again moving to a bigger and better office (now in Philly), but for the first time ever we now have an actual 2+ year lease. Finally, we’ve expanded the organization to three employees, welcoming Kristian Sekse as a second program director in March and Rosemary DiRita as Executive Director this past August as Amelia moved on to grad school.

Another thing we did in 2008 was run our first ever winter ride, the Chris Webber Memorial Ride. It was a resounding success, donating more than $12,840 to the Chris Webber Memorial fund and building for 3 days with HFH of Broward County. The group consisted of 21 riders as well as Chris’ parents and brother Nick, and as a director as well as participant I can honestly say it was the best Bike & Build trip I’ve ever seen. The group bonded quickly and had a ton of fun right from day 1 and has stayed in close contact since the trip ended. People were honestly trying to sign up for the 2009 trip the day 08 ended."
