Our government will save us...

Looks like our government is going to decrease our chances a little from getting hit by a huge rock from space, at least they have until 2029 to come up with a plan. I wonder if that was included with the calculation for deciding whether or not to turn on that collider?  See Here.

Price Per Tank

Gas Mileage Per Tank
On another note I'm still pretty happy with my Honda Fit.  I've been collecting gas milage data on my iPhone for a few months (Feb to June, 4000 miles) and you can see the price per fill up going up.  My gas milage has been pretty good, not ever dropping below 30 mpg.  It's a great little car with tons of space inside and lots of different ways to move the seats around. See Here.  This weekend Amanda and I are going up to Santa Barbara for a friends wedding and I'll be putting the car in Utility mode so we can fit both our bikes and luggage in the back.  Should be a fun trip, there are lots of bike paths up there.

Ride on!

Few! All clear!

Seem like we have nothing at all to worry about.....few...

It's not THAT bad...pretty good odds...I guess...

So here are some stats on what they might find/figure out when they turn on the death machine, as well as a picture someone made that mirrors my beliefs (Warning: Foul language) Chan feel free to comment in on any of this, I'm sure it will be amusing.  As well as I'm sure you'll have your own post (here or here) with in the next 21 days we have left on this earth:

Source (Popular Science) by Rena Marie Pacella

Higgs Boson: 9 in 10
Its existence would explain the origin of mass. Higgs bosons create a field through which all other particles must move. The Higgs field's resistance to this motion gives particles their mass. (This one is pretty cool, and pretty likely, most importantly though, NOT scary)(Warning: Bad Language but very funny image below)

Dark Matter: 3 in 5
Scientists know it's there; they just don't know what it is, and finding out is a task for the LHC. The substance makes up 80 percent of the matter in the universe but doesn't emit any light, so it's totally invisible. (Not sure how they are going to find it, if they can't see it, but hopefully they have a way)

Supersymmetry: 3 in 7
Some physicists suspect that all particles in the universe come in matched pairs. Half are familiar-electrons, quarks and neutrinos-but their theoretical counterparts, called superpartners, are still undiscovered. (Sure, check Winki for these things, no clue)

Extra Dimensions: 1 in 25
Spatial dimensions beyond the known three of up-down, backward-forward and side-to-side could be diluting the force of gravity in our universe. (Also really cool, seems like pretty good odds to me too, now if we can use it to travel that will rock)

Mini Black Holes: 1 in 1,000
LHC collisions might produce harmless black holes, each a billion billionth the mass of a grain of salt, that evaporate almost instantaneously-too fast to consume any matter. (Ummm, yeah.  They say they are safe but honestly, I don't remember reading anything good about black holes.  Not sure if we should be creating these little puppies on earth)

Parallel Universes: 1 in 10 million
Some theorists speculate that many universes exist side by side with our own on a cosmic landscape, each with its own laws of physics and constants of nature. (Sweet!)

Cosmic Implosion: 1 in a googol (10100)*
If the fundamental vacuum state of the universe is not perfectly stable, the LHC could make it decay, taking everything in the cosmos with it. (OKAY, this is the one that sucks, go ahead read it again.  We'll at least it won't hurt, we won't even know I guess.  Still I feel like the guy who threw the switch would at least get a sinking feeling.  Googol or not, should we really be taking ANY chance on this one? I mean isn't this getting into a GOD/Science combo?)
